Today, the most stunning examples of these rock churches are found in the UNESCO World Heritage site in Göreme, Turkey. Over the centuries, time and changing religious beliefs have taken their toll on many of these caves, but Göreme National Park contains the best and most well-preserved examples of these cave churches and what spiritual devotion once inspired. I’ve included a catalog with examples of these cave frescoes as well as some frescoes and mosaics from Agia Sofia, in Istanbul.
While most travelers visit Cappadocia for its spectacular geology, scenery and history, the people and culture of this large region in central Turkey are also compelling. Especially when you venture out into the smaller communities that dot the landscape.
